The Calligrapher — Wang Xizhi

王羲之 (303–361 CE), honoured as the Sage of Calligraphy (书圣) and “Wang the Right General” (王右军). The pre-eminent brush of the Eastern Jin; his surviving works survive only as later Tang imperial tracings — the Orchid Pavilion Preface (兰亭集序, 353 CE) among them. His aesthetic, “floating like cloud, startling like a dragon” (飘若浮云，矫若惊龙), fused spontaneity with structure and set the thousand-year canon. Nearly every later master — 献之, 虞世南, 欧阳询, 颜真卿, 苏轼 — traces lineage back to his hand.

The Character — 山 (shān)

shān, first tone; a free-standing morpheme. The Shuowen defines it as「宣也。宣气散，生万物，有石而高。象形」— a picture of peaks, rocky and high, that spreads the breath of life and births the myriad things. The Songs fix it:「幽幽南山」(“the deep, dark Southern Mountain”); the Changes name Gen the mountain trigram:「艮为山」, stillness and boundary. 山 means mountain, steadiness, the rooted — a single 山 reads cleanly alone, a common, positive tattoo.

Honest note: 山 is also a very common surname (孙中山), so a literate reader may first read it as a name; alone it can be shorthand for 山水 (landscape).

The Cultural Story

Wang Xizhi widens the frame at once:「此地有崇山峻嶺，茂林修竹」— “here are lofty mountains and steep ridges, dense woods and tall bamboo,” written at the Orchid Pavilion on Mount Kuaiji's shaded north face. In his brush 山 is stillness observed by speed — the fastest, most fluid hand in Chinese history writing the character for what does not move. That tension is the whole Lanting mood. Mood: still, rooted, enduring.
