In the modern world

弃权 is the abstention a delegate records, 放弃 the dream a founder posts about quitting, 丢弃 the bottle in the bin. We still set things down — a vote, a plan, a carton — and mostly without the mercy or the cruelty the old basket implied. Letting go got administrative.

Why this character belongs on skin

There is a courage in the letting go that looks, from the outside, like loss. Qì is to cast off, to abandon, to leave behind what can no longer travel with you. The sages abandoned comfort for the mountain; the bereaved abandon the body of the one they loved to the earth, and are remade by the leaving. The Buddha named 弃 as the first motion of freedom — renounce the thing that binds, and the chain falls with it. And yet to abandon is not to forget; the Daoist drops the branch but keeps the river. To carry this character is to testify you had the strength to put down what was killing you, and walk lighter. Let it rest where you can feel it lift, a quiet mark that you released, and that the empty hands you now carry are stronger than the full ones you left behind.
