Cultural Story

颠 builds on 頁 'head' with 真 as sound, meaning the crown of the head and, by tumbling, to fall and overturn. 《說文》 says 顛 is 頂也, 'the top,' and also to fall. The head leads the fall, so 颠 paints things turned upside down and thrown into chaos.

In the modern world

颠 means top and overturn: 颠倒 upside down, 颠簸 a bumpy jolting ride, 颠覆 to overthrow a government, 颠沛 hardship and wandering, 颠狂 manic and wild. A cart 颠簸 on the road; a regime is 颠覆; a life in 颠沛 still finds song.

Why this character belongs on skin

Every peak and every fall use the same character. 颠 means the summit—颠峰, the mountaintop where the wind takes your name—and it means to topple, to be overthrown, 颠覆, the dynasty or the life that turns heels over head. Page-radical with a phonetic of true, it first named the crown of the head, the highest point of a body: the place closest to sky, and therefore the first to meet whatever falls. The ancients felt no contradiction. Height and collapse are one fact seen from two hours; the emperor at 颠峰 is already writing the abdication. Zen turns it into a koan of freedom—before enlightenment, chop wood; after enlightenment, chop wood—the summit, it turns out, is a place you carry. To ink 颠 is to sign a contract with the whole arc: I will seek the top and not lie about the descent, I will stand at my highest point knowing it is also the top of a wheel. Put it on the spine, that original crown-line, and walk into your altitude with your eyes open and your head, at 颠, unbowed.
