Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 单 Dān (1st tone; also shàn, chán). The Shuowen: 「單,大也」 — single, but originally 'great.' The Documents use it as 'complete': 《書·洛誥》「乃單文祖德」 (he made full his civil ancestor's virtue). The Songs pray 「俾爾單厚」 (《詩·小雅·天保》) — 'make you solely rich.' Later 单 also means 'single / alone' (單身, 單薄). So the character holds both 'whole/great' and 'solitary/thin.' As a tattoo it can read as 'single-minded' or, riskily, 'lonely / thin.' If used alone, intend it as 單純 (pure, single-hearted); pair with 純 or 心 to soften the lonely edge. Element tables assign Fire (火).

Cultural Story

The Xiongnu ruler bore the title 協于 — “sole son of heaven” of the steppe — a 単 that meant alone and absolute. 簡単 later praised a plan with nothing spare; 單獨 the road walked by oneself. The word climbs from a nomad's throne to the plain bowl a monk ate from.

Where a Western reader can stand: Wei Dan served the Cao Wei court and was famed for gigantic characters on palace gates and steles — legend says Emperor Mingdi had him lowered by basket to write tall gateways. His regular script is the imperial sign-board manner: bold, architectural, made to be read from a distance. 单 in his hand becomes a single, monumental statement, 'sole and whole,' sized like an inscription rather than a whisper.

In the modern world

A form asks if you are 單獨; 簡単 is the recipe a tired cook picks. 單位 is the workplace a text summons you to, 單數 the grammar a child fails, 名單 the roll a teacher calls, and 單據 the receipt a wallet keeps. The word runs from the emperor's lonely title to the office and the grocery.

Why this character belongs on skin

One banner, one man, one thread — 单 is the single, the alone, the simple, the odd number that stands without a pair. To be 单 is to be unaccompanied and therefore undivided: the lone walker, the plain truth, the unit from which everything else is built. The West fears solitude; the character knows 单独 is not emptiness but focus, the clarity of the one who answers only to himself. A 单身 is whole before he is doubled. Wear 单 where you are most yourself, the center of the chest, the single line of the spine. Let it mark the part of you no one shares, the solitude you chose and keep. The ink is one stroke kept alone, a quiet pull toward the strength of standing by yourself, complete, before the world asks you to be more.
