Poets wrote 擬古, imitations of the ancients, Tao Yuanming among them, composing in the voice of a dead master to prove they had heard him. 拟 is the hand drafting, planning, pretending to be someone earlier. The exercise was homage and audition at once, and a young official's 擬古 poem was really a quiet job application to the tradition itself.
