Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 七 七 (qī, 1st tone) opens the Shuowen Jiezi with a cosmic, not merely cardinal, definition: 陽之正也。从一,微陰從中衺出也 — 'the proper yang number; from one, a faint yin emerges askew from within.' Graphically it is the yang unit pierced by a small stroke. Its classical weight is dense: the Shijing (邶風·凯风) counts '有子七人' (seven sons); the Yijing (既濟) measures '七日得' (recovered in seven days); the Liji (月令) fixes '其數七' as summer's number; the Shujing (舜典) speaks of '齊七政' (the seven regulators of heaven). As a free morpheme 七 simply means 'seven' and is auspicious in 七宝 and 七政. Honest disclosure: in funeral custom 做七 marks the seven-week mourning rites, and 七 is the Western 'lucky seven' only by coincidence — never present it as a Christian symbol, and note to Chinese-literate friends its ritual-death association.
Cultural Story
The 詩經 opens its seasonal round with 七月流火, the fire star sliding west as the harvest nears, a farmer's calendar in song. Tang poets bent 七律 into eight strict lines, Du Fu counting grief in regulated tones. Seven was a number of arrangement, not magic. A court musician tuned to seven strings; a cook cut 七彩 into a cold plate of seven colored vegetables.
Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 七 simply means 'seven' — a clean, ancient numeral, not a casino 'lucky 7.' Its only snag is the Chinese funerary 做七 rites (seven weeks of mourning), so mention that to avoid surprise; Wu Xizai's rounded seal script makes the glyph serene, but the caveat stays honest.
