Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 为 为 (wéi, 2nd tone; also wèi, 4th tone), traditional 爲, has a famously wrong Shuowen entry: 母猴也。其爲禽好爪。爪,母猴象也。下腹爲母猴形 — 'a female macaque; the creature is fond of its claws; 爪 depicts the macaque.' Xu Shen had no oracle bones. Those were read in 1915 by Luo Zhenyu, who saw the real picture: a hand (爪) leading an elephant (象), i.e. 役象以助劳, 'working elephants to help with labour.' The word therefore means to do, to make, to act as, to become. Its classical life is mostly about restraint: 无为而治者,其舜也与 ('the one who governed by non-action — was that not Shun?', Lunyu, Weilinggong); 为学日益,为道日损 (Daodejing 48); and the Shijing's 我生之初尚无为 (Wangfeng, Tuyuan). Honest disclosure: 为 is a grammatical workhorse — 'for', 'as', 'to be' — and reads incomplete alone; add 亻 and it becomes 伪, 'false'. Kangxi files it at 12 strokes.
Cultural Story
為 showed a hand leading an elephant, to act, to make, to be. The 論語 asks 為政, how to govern; the 道德經 answers 無為, do nothing and nothing is left undone. 為 is the busiest verb in the classical tongue, the hinge between intention and deed. A hand on the great beast became the word for every kind of doing, from ruling a state to boiling rice.
Where a Western reader can stand: Xianyu Shu was a 13th-century Yuan official whose robust running-cursive rivalled Zhao Mengfu; his strokes are vigorous yet well-balanced. 为 in that hand is fluent and grounded — doing with discipline. Honest caveat: 为 is a function word that reads unfinished alone (add 亻 → 伪 'false'); it is not 'power' — pair it as 无为 or 敢为.

The character is pure function, cause, purpose, transformation. You speak it constantly without seeing the elephant anymore; it has worn smooth into the connective tissue of every sentence that explains why or what something became.
