2 · The Character: 安 Ān (1st tone). The Shuowen reads 安 as 「静也。从女在宀下」 — 'peace; a woman under the roof.' The ancient ideogram ties domestic security to a sheltered woman — a settled household is a safe one. The Odes sing it: 《诗经·小雅·常棣》 「丧乱既平，既安且宁」 — 'the turmoil ended, we are calm and at peace.' Confucius echoes: 《论语·学而》 「君子食无求饱，居无求安」 — 'the gentleman seeks not fullness in food nor ease in dwelling' — warning against mistaking comfort for the good. Grading: a free, warm morpheme — peace, safety, ease. No negative sense. Disclose the classical gender framing (女在宀下) honestly, and that 安 means settled peace, not mere 'comfortable'. The Odes also use 安 as a verb of settlement: 乃安斯寝 — 'then they rested in peace'. To a Western eye the form may look like 'woman + roof = possession', but in use it is shelter given, the calm earned after turmoil, never ownership of a person.

Cultural Story

Mencius warned that 'life comes of sorrow, death of ease' — 生于忧患，死于安乐 — and the 'Songs' ask, with the hair gone, 'where shall it rest?' 安 as how or where. The graph roofs a woman, the household made safe, calm as the ground condition of a life.
