Cultural Story

帷 is a side curtain that screens a space, and the Shuowen says 'what hangs at the side is a 帷.' In war the commander planned within the 帷幄, the tent of curtains, giving us 运筹帷幄 - to strategize from within. The 帷 thus marks the boundary between the public and the private council, the place where decisions are made behind cloth. To draw the 帷 was to step into confidence and command.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A theatre raises its 帷幕, its curtain, before the show, and history books praise the general who planned in the 帷幄, the command tent. A bedroom has a 帷帐, a draped curtain, around the bed. Though we say 'curtain' plainly now, the 帷 keeps its air of the inner room where real choices are made - the soft wall behind which leaders think and lovers hide.

Why this character belongs on skin

Behind the curtain, the real ceremony happens. 帷 is the hanging cloth that divides the seen from the unseen—the general's war tent, the bride's veil, the screen behind which an emperor decided a life. The cloth-radical drifts; the ancients knew that what is concealed is not always hidden in shame but in reverence. The Daoist keeps a 帷 around the mysteries, for to unveil too soon is to kill the holy. Love lives behind one: the private country two people build that the world is not invited to. We hang our curtains crooked, showing too much, and wonder why the magic leaks out. Wear this ink where you keep what is yours alone, and let the soft character bless the boundary: not everything must be displayed to be sacred. The veil is not a wall; it is a threshold.
