Cultural Story
镜 pairs the metal radical 金 with 竟, “to complete or reflect.” In antiquity a 镜 was a polished bronze disc, not glass; the 《説文解字》 defines it as 景也, that which catches an image. Bronze mirrors appear from the Shang onward and were treasured grave goods, used for grooming, ritual, and the belief that they revealed truth and warded off spirits.

Read the story behind the character
Modern 镜 covers any reflecting surface: 镜子 the bathroom mirror, 眼镜 the glasses correcting our sight, and 镜头 the camera lens framing a film shot. 望远镜 bring distant stars close while 显微镜 reveal the unseen small. From a bronze disc on a noble's table to optical glass in every device, 镜 remains our way of seeing what lies beyond the naked eye.
Why this character belongs on skin
The character 镜 is metal plus stillness: the bronze radical, for the polished discs the ancients breathed upon and angled to catch the sun, and a sound that also meant astonishing. Before glass, a mirror was a piece of worked metal you kept bright with care—an object that required devotion to keep honest. Buddhism made the mirror its master metaphor: the great sutra says the mind should stand like one, reflecting everything, clinging to nothing—faces come and go, the surface keeps none. Tang poets sat before bronze mirrors and saw dynasties in them; one wrote that to polish a mirror is to polish the self. A tattoo is the one mirror that follows you instead of waiting. You will catch it at bus stops and bathroom doors, mid-thought, unprepared, and it will show you the same thing the bronze showed the ancients: yourself, arriving. Keep the surface clean. Keep looking.
