2 · The Character: 当 当 (dāng, 1st tone), traditional 當, is glossed by the Shuowen Jiezi as 田相值也。从田尚聲 — 'fields matching each other,' two plots of equal worth set against one another. Duan Yucai's commentary explains 值者，持也。田與田相持也 — 'to match is to hold; field holding field' — and from that comes every later sense: to face, to be equal to, to take on, to be fit. Kangxi files 當 at 13 strokes under the 田 radical. 《論語·衛靈公》 gives it its finest line: 當仁不讓於師 — 'when it comes to humaneness, yield not even to your teacher.' 《易·履卦》 九五 reads 夬履貞厲，位正當也, 'the position is exactly right.' Li Bai's 《蜀道難》 has 一夫當關，萬夫莫開 — 'one man holds the pass, ten thousand cannot force it.' Honest disclosure: read dàng, the same graph means to pawn — 当铺 is a pawnshop, 典当 is pawning, and 上当 means to be swindled.

Cultural Story

當 is the sound of two boards meeting — to face, to bear, to be at the moment. 說文 gives it as equal weights on a scale, and the word kept that honesty of the instant: what you stand before now, what you must hold, the time that is actually happening.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 'to face / to be equal to / to take on' — and Xie An is the proof, the minister who broke a far larger army and went back to his board game. Honest caveat: 当 is a busy function word that reads like half a sentence alone, and as dàng it means pawn or swindle (当铺, 上当) — pair it (担当, 当仁不让). His calligraphic fame is real but rests on Tang and Song critics; no verified autograph survives.
