Cultural Story

Li Bai's 赠汪伦 hears 忽闻岸上踏歌声, suddenly the sound of stamping songs on the bank, as Wang Lun sends him off beating time with his feet. 踏青, the spring outing, keeps that stepping on fresh earth. 踏 is the foot meeting the ground in joy as much as in work. The stamping song on the bank is the foot keeping time at a leaving.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

At a field, a surveyor 踏勘, surveys, the site while a family 踏青, walks the spring hills, and a recruit 踏步, marches in place. A buyer 踏上, sets foot on, a new floor and a worker feels 踏实, steady, at last. The poet's stamping song now measures a survey line and a settled mind. The survey line and the spring walk are the same foot set on the earth.

Why this character belongs on skin

The foot radical beside water's sound: to tread, to step with weight and intent. Not walking — the body's whole measure given to one placed foot, the way a pilgrim steps, the way a dancer commits. The poets loved the character for its ceremonies: treading the frost at dawn, treading the moon home, treading flowers into fragrance on a spring road. There is a rougher music too. 踏歌 — stamping songs — were village dances where a whole community beat the earth in rhythm and sang above it, joy performed with the feet because the heart had no other instrument large enough. To tread is to accept that every crossing changes the ground; you cannot pass through a life weightless. The question is only what your steps announce — haste, fear, or something deliberate. Ink it along the ankle or the instep, on the body's own threshold. Then walk like you mean where you're going.
