Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 富 Fù (4th tone). The Shuowen reads 富 as 「备也。一曰厚也。从宀畐声」 — 'complete, furnished; another gloss: thick / abundant; from 宀 and 畐 (phonetic).' A roof filled with means is wealth. The 易经 names it the greatest work: 《易经·系辞上》 「富有之谓大业,日新之谓盛德」 — 'to be abundantly endowed is the great enterprise; to renew daily is the full virtue.' So 富 is plenty joined to renewal — wealth as a living estate, not hoarding. Grading: a free, positive morpheme — rich, abundant. No negative sense. Disclose that 富 is 'abundance/furnished', distinct from 贵 (honour); it is means, not rank. Folk sayings pair it as 富不过三代 — wealth seldom survives three generations — a caution that 富 is a trust, not a guarantee. The opposite extreme, 为富不仁, warns that riches without humanity corrupt. So 富 is plenty held with renewal (日新), the 易经's own definition.

Cultural Story

The 'Analects' admit 'wealth and rank are what men desire' — 富与贵 — and Mencius holds 'wealth cannot corrupt' — 富贵不能淫. 富强 built the state. The graph roofs a vessel full of grain — abundance as the filled store, the good the sage nonetheless warned against loving too well.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 富 is 'sufficientia' rather than 'divitiae' — the full larder, not the treasure chest. The graph is a roof (宀) over a filled vessel (畐), and the 易經 defines it as an activity, not a state: 富有之謂大業,日新之謂盛德 — abundance is the great enterprise, and renewing it daily is the full virtue. Bo Shaozhi is the apt hand because his own wealth was inherited style. He was a fifth-century official of the Liu Song court whose running script was rated second only to the Wang family tradition — a man handed the finest manner in the empire and judged on whether he could keep it living. That is precisely the warning inside 富: 富不過三代, wealth seldom survives three generations. So this pairing is abundance under the obligation of renewal. For a Western wearer it reads closer to a well-kept estate than to a lottery win — plenty that has to be earned again each morning.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

Finance apps track 财富, and menus boast 丰富 spreads. Surveys measure 富裕 households, while slogans promise 富强. The grain-filled roof of the sage now means a portfolio, a buffet, and a campaign — abundance still desired, still displayed, still cautioned against in the same breath.

Why this character belongs on skin

Decode this character and you find a whole ethic: a roof (宀) over a mouth (口) with a field's bounty stored beneath — 富 is wealth defined as a household with enough. Not gold heaps; fullness. The roof radical matters: the classical mind insisted riches only count inside shelter, inside family, inside a life — money anywhere else is just weather. There is also a sense of 富 as abundance in kind: 富有 means to possess richly, whether of experience, of spirit, of years. So this is not the dollar-sign tattoo; it is the older, better one. Wear 富 as a private definition, set over your door like the character itself: may there always be enough under this roof, and may I know the difference between enough and more.
