The Shuowen defines 嗄 as a hoarse voice, and the Daoist writers turned it into a lesson on effortless vitality. The Zhuangzi observes that a healthy infant cries the whole day yet its throat never grows 嗄 — hoarse — because its breath is natural and unforced. By contrast, the anxious adult wears his voice thin with worry and striving. In the classical mind 嗄 marked the small failure of harmony between body and breath, a tiredness the sage was meant to outgrow.
