Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 收 Shōu (1st tone). 《说文》 is startling: 「收,捕也。从攴丩聲」 — 'to arrest; from 攴 (a hand holding a rod) with 丩 as phonetic.' The gathering-in we now hear was originally a seizing-in. The Yijing preserves the agricultural turn at Jǐng 井 (48), the Well, whose top line reads 「井收勿幕,有孚元吉」 — the well is drawn from and left uncovered; there is confidence, supreme good fortune. Sima Qian then fixes 收 in the cosmic calendar in 《史记·太史公自序》: 「夫春生夏長,秋收冬藏,此天道之大經也」 — spring bears, summer grows, autumn gathers, winter stores; this is the great constant of the way of heaven. That places 收 squarely in autumn, and autumn is Metal in the Five Phases, so the Wuxing attribution here is structural rather than arbitrary. Honest disclosure: 收 alone is a plain, very high-frequency verb (收到 'received', 收費 'to charge a fee'), and 收屍 means to collect a corpse. Kangxi: 6 strokes. Wuxing: Metal (金).

Cultural Story

收 is the gathered season. The Book of Songs sings the harvest — 收 the millet before the frost; the farmer 收 the tools at dusk. 收藏 is what the scholar does with the scroll and the seal. The word closes the year and the hand: what was sown is taken in, counted, and laid by against the lean months.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 收 is the rod that gathers in — colligere, the harvest drawn from the Well, 井收勿幕. Honestly its first life was 'to arrest' (捕也), and a cautious ear hears 收監 'imprison' or 收屍 'collect a corpse'. Worn for harvest or receiving it stands alone well, but pair it with 秋 so the grain shows; the rod that seizes is older than the grain it gathers.

In the modern world

You 收到 the parcel, 收入 the salary, 收获 the lesson from the failed launch. 收藏 is the feed you hoard; 收拾 the room before the guests. 吸收 is what the sponge and the startup do. From the harvest to the inbox, 收 is the verb of taking in and putting away, daily and without ceremony.

Why this character belongs on skin

The grain is cut and carried home — that is 收, to gather in, to harvest, to receive what the season owed. The character is a hand closing on something precious; it is the end of effort and the start of keeping. We know 收 in the quiet triumph of the harvest festival, the inbox finally empty, the lover who lets you in. To tattoo 收 is to honor the art of completion, of not letting the good spoil in the field. The Daoist gathers the qi; the miser gathers gold, and only one sleeps well. There is a tenderness in receiving, too — the orphan who was taken in, the heart that learned to accept help. Carry 收 and you carry the wisdom of the closed hand, the knowledge that some things are meant to be kept. Let it rest where you'd cradle something fragile. The ink is a palm, curled. It says: this, I gather. This, I keep.
