Chang means moving without obstruction — wine flowing, speech flowing, breath flowing. Wang Xizhi's Orchid Pavilion preface gives it its most elegant outing: 畅叙幽情, to pour out deep feeling freely, as friends drift down a stream with floating winecups.

畅 is what water does when nothing blocks it — it flows, it finds the sea, it does not ask to be allowed. The old writers used 畅快 for the clean joy of a body moving without obstruction, breath unstopped, words finally spoken all the way out.
