The character 凸 copies the shape of a bump, a swelling in an otherwise flat surface. Stone-cutters and calligraphers met it whenever they pulled 拓片, ink rubbings from carved steles where the characters stand 凸 in relief beneath the paper. Travellers through the 三峡 gorges noted how the 凸 cliffs leaned out over the rushing river. The form records something a hand can feel: a rise against the level around it.
