Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
### Soundshì — shì (4th tone). Free-standing morpheme ### Original meaningShì (4th tone). The Shuowen Jiezi defines it as 「勢,盛力權也。从力埶聲。經典通用埶」 — 'the fullness of force and leverage', from 力 (force) with 埶 as phonetic, and adds that the classics generally write it 埶 (the old graph, a hand planting a seedling). That is the whole idea: 勢 is not raw strength but the shape force takes — gradient, position, leverage. The Yijing gives it its canonical line: 〈象傳〉「地勢坤,君子以厚德載物」 — the 勢 of the earth is 坤; the superior man answers it by carrying things. 《孟子·尽心上》「好善而忘勢」 — the man who loves goodness forgets power. 《书·君陈》 warns against it: 「毋倚勢作威」. And in the strategists 勢 is a technical term — the momentum a commander builds, the shape of the ground he stands on, the reason 孙子 says a good commander seeks victory from 勢 rather than from his men. Honest disclosure: 勢 is also the word for social clout (权势), for snobbery (势利), and, in the old dictionaries, for the male genitals — 《韻會》「外腎爲勢。宮刑,男子割勢」. ### The structure (形聲 · 从力,埶聲 — force (力) with 埶 as phonetic; Shuowen notes 經典通用埶, the older graph of a hand planting a seedling)①力lìforce, strengththe radical, but 勢 is not raw force②埶yìto plant (the old graph)the classical form — a hand setting a seedling in earth③地勢dìshìthe lie of the landthe Yijing's own use: 地勢坤④權quánleverage, authorityShuowen's 盛力權也 — force plus the lever it acts through ### In use todayItemReading / meaningNoteReadingshì (4th tone)single readingCore sensemomentum, terrain, leveragethe shape force takes, not force itselfGrammarnoun, free morpheme地势 terrain, 形势 situation, 权势 clout, 势能 potential energy, 势必 inevitablyTattoo fitcaution — clout and snobbery also attachthe strategic sense is real and serious ### Closest words in English — and what each misses - Power / strength — 力/權 hold force and authority; 勢 is their shape — gradient, position, leverage - Momentum — momentum is the closest English, but 勢 also carries terrain and social clout - Destiny / fate — 命/運 hold fate; 勢 is the tendency of a situation, which a person can still use or resist - Success — 成/勝 hold succeeding; 勢 is the ground that makes success easier, not the successAn honest note on grammar. Cultural Story
Mencius tells a king that “雖有智慧,不如乘势” — wisdom avails less than riding the moment's 势. The word names the tilt of affairs a ruler feels before he speaks. In the chess manual 势 is the grip one player holds; in the garden it is the lean of a branch the wind has claimed.
Where a Western reader can stand: 勢 (shì) is one of the hardest words in classical Chinese to translate: Xu Shen defines it as 盛力權也, the fullness of force and leverage — the gradient that does the work before anyone pushes. The Yijing uses it for the shape of the earth (地勢坤). But be clear-eyed: the same character means social clout and snobbery, and the old dictionaries record an anatomical sense. As a tattoo it is serious and steep, not a word for personal strength.

Investors chase 趋势 in a trading app; 優势 is what a resume claims over rivals. The evening broadcast reads the 局势 in a border town, and a commuter feels 势力 in the press of a packed subway car. 形势 charts the river's rise hour by hour as the rains come.
