Cultural Story
吊 was to mourn the dead. When Zhuangzi's friend Hui Shi died, Zhuangzi went to the house, beat a tub, and sang -- an odd 吊丧 that shocked the mourners. The word meant to condole, to hang over the loss. Later it meant to hang literally -- a lamp, a crane's hook. It carried grief and the rope in one old graph.

Read the story behind the character
A 吊车 lifts the steel at the site; a 吊灯 hangs in the hall. A family receives 吊唁 for the grandmother; the license is 吊销 for the breach. The word runs the day's hanging and grieving -- the crane, the lamp, the condolence, the revocation. It names the load raised and the loss marked, the thing suspended and the visit made to the house of the dead.
Why this character belongs on skin
There is a particular kind of silence that only arrives when something is suspended — a lantern over a doorway, a man at the end of a rope, a question that has not yet fallen. 吊 is that suspension. Its old shape carries the mouth and the thing hung beneath it, a body held in waiting. In the West we know the image from our own grief: to attend a funeral is to 吊, to stand in the hush and pay respect to what has been let go. There is no panic in it. Only the long, unbearable poise before descent. To wear this character is to admit that you live, always, a breath away from the drop, and that you have made peace with the hanging. Some marks shout. This one waits. It is the tattoo for the person who has stared into loss and chosen, deliberately, to remain suspended in the quiet just above it.
