Cultural Story
堰 is a low weir that raises water for irrigation without blocking it entirely. The crowning example is 都江堰 (Dujiangyan), built around 256 BCE by 李冰 (Li Bing) of Qin, still watering the Chengdu plain today. Its 鱼嘴 divide channels and its 飞沙堰 spillway shunts silt away, turning the wild Min River tame. 堰塘 are the quiet ponds that sit behind such weirs in the countryside.

Read the story behind the character
Rural 堰塘 (weir ponds) still hold carp and irrigation water for the rice crop; 堤堰 appear in county water-conservancy reports every spring. Visitors to Sichuan stand on 都江堰's 鱼嘴 and watch the 2,300-year-old engineering still work. Hydropower debates invoke 堰 when weighing fish passage against power generation, and the gentle dam keeps its old reputation for sharing the river.
Why this character belongs on skin
The weir, the low dam that bends a river without stopping it — that is 堰. The character joins earth with a sense of holding back, the farmer's quiet engineering, the wall that says to the flood not stop but slow. To carry 堰 is to honor the art of the partial barrier, the wisdom of checking a force without killing it. We are taught to dam everything or nothing, to repress or to drown; 堰 is the middle path, the measured restraint that lets the water still run, still live, still reach the field. The Daoist governs like a 堰, shaping the flow without breaking the stream. This is the ink for the person who has learned to hold back just enough — of anger, of speed, of confession — to let the good part through. Wear it where the current runs, a small vow to be the weir, the thing that tempers without ending, that shapes the river by standing in it kindly. The water thanks you by becoming useful.
