Cultural Story
媽 is a later, spoken character, a woman radical (女) with the sound of 馬, coined for the warmest word in the language — mother. It never appears in the Confucian classics, which preferred the solemn 母, yet 媽 captured the nursery tongue every child babbles first. Folk speech spun kin from it: 奶奶 for grandmother, 姨媽 for the maternal aunt, 後媽 for the stepmother. Humble and new, 媽 still carries the oldest bond — the call to the woman who fed and held us.
Common words & phrases

Read the story behind the character
A child runs to 媽媽 (mom, mother) after school; a friendly 大媽 (aunt, auntie) waves from the courtyard. A cousin visits her 姨媽 (maternal aunt), and a wealthy household once kept a 奶媽 (wet nurse). A story's cruel 後媽 (stepmother) contrasts with the kind 媽媽, and a phone call ends with 'love you, 媽媽.' 媽 is the modern word for mother and the aunties around her — the kin who fuss, feed, and fuss some more, the heart of family talk.
Why this character belongs on skin
The first word every child learns, in any tongue, is some version of this — the open vowel, the soft close, the call for the one who fed and held us. 妈 is mother, and the character builds her from woman and horse, as if to say she is the beast of burden and the source of comfort both. She carries, and she loves, and she does not stop. We spend our lives either running toward her or away, and the tattoo on your arm is a confession either way. To mark 妈 is to admit you came from somewhere, from someone, that the self was a gift before it was a project. It is the most honest ink you can wear — not a rebellion, but a root. Wear it where your own hand can find it, in the dark.
