Cultural Story

射 shows a hand drawing a bow; the Shuowen gives it as to shoot. Archery was one of the six arts of the gentleman, and 射箭 (archery) filled the rites. Later 射 meant any projection: 发射 (launch) of a signal, 反射 (reflection) of light, or 投射 (casting) a glance across a crowded room. The 射线 (ray) of the sun was poetic.

Why this character belongs on skin

The archer draws, holds the trembling line between tension and surrender, and at the precise instant lets go — the arrow was never his to keep. The character is the bow-arm and the released shaft, the act of sending something of yourself outward beyond recall. Confucian archery was a meditation, the straightening of the self before the straightening of the shot; the warrior knew the arrow once loosed carries your intention into the world and you cannot call it back. To shoot is to commit, to make a choice that becomes history. We hoard our arrows, afraid to miss, and die with the quiver full. Wear this as a vow against the unlived life — you will draw and you will release, you will let your intentions fly even knowing some will fall short. Let it mark the arm or the chest, the place an arrow leaves from, proof that you preferred the risk of the shot to the safety of the undrawn bow.
