Rare in classical prose, 拉 came into its voice in the vernacular novels. In 水滸傳 outlaws 拉 the hero into the tavern, the market woman 拉s you toward her pears. The character is the pull that drags another person, willing or not, a hinge word between force and friendship, and the storytellers needed it long before the poets ever did, for the street spoke before the academy.
