A spoken variant of 揀, the character filled the vernacular novels where a maid 揀出 the good pears or a beggar 揀 up a coin. The old literary tongue said 擇; the storyteller said 揀, and the storyteller won the daily tongue. The printed page eventually surrendered the market to the mouth, as it usually does in the end.
