Cultural Story
瀑 is water plus 暴 (sudden, violent), the stream that falls all at once, the Shuowen notes it as a sudden, pouring rush. Classical travel writing and Tang poetry revered the 瀑布 (waterfall) as a spectacle of nature's raw force: Li Bai's lines on the 瀑挂前川 are still recited by schoolchildren. The 瀑流 (waterfall, torrent) was both a danger on mountain roads and a subject monks painted near their cliff temples. The character is water surrendering to gravity in the most dramatic way it knows.

Read the story behind the character
瀑 is the honeypot of the mountains. Tourists queue to photograph the 瀑布 (waterfall) at Huangguoshu or Jiuzhaigou, and a drone shot of a 瀑流 (waterfall, torrent) racks up likes. Hikers time trips to the rainy season when the falls thunder, though parks close paths if the 瀑 gets dangerous. You will not use 瀑 alone in a text, but it names the single most-posted natural wonder in Chinese travel, the place where water decides, briefly and loudly, to become a falling thing.
Why this character belongs on skin
The waterfall is the one place a river stops pretending to be patient. 瀑 pairs the water radical with a character meaning violent, sudden—a breaking-forth, white water dropping whole distances at once. Chinese landscape painters reserved their finest ink for it: the single unbroken stroke of foam down a black cliff, the one loud thing in a silent mountain, where monks built their huts precisely to hear it forever. Li Bai watched one and thought it was the Milky Way falling from heaven. There is surrender in water's willingness to fall—it does not mourn the height it leaves; it becomes mist, rainbow, roar, and goes on. You have stood before one and felt your ribs hum. You have also been one: the moment composure broke and everything in you came down at once, and it was not ruin, it was release. Ink this along the side, in the long vertical where a cascade would fall, and let it honor the part of you that is most alive when it finally lets go.
