Why this character belongs on skin

煞 is the character of the killing wind — the fierce spirit the old geomancers feared and named. Its root is 杀, to slay, sharpened by fire into 煞: the baleful force said to ride down from a jagged ridge, to gather at a crossed threshold, to flare in a person's temper until the room itself goes cold. Temple doors faced it down with mirrors; soldiers were praised for having 煞气, an aura that preceded the sword. But the word also kept its human warmth at the edges — 煞费苦心, to spend effort to the point of ache, a love that exhausts itself tending. Every tradition knows this double face: the wrath that destroys and the wrath that protects the vulnerable, Shiva as well as the storm. To wear 煞 is to accept your own weather — to keep the fire that can level a house aimed at whatever threatens yours, and gentle everywhere else.
