Cultural Story

糟 is the spent lees of brewing — grain after the wine is drawn off — hence anything spoiled. The histories enshrine 糟糠之妻, the wife who shared your lees and husks in poverty, never to be cast aside. 糟蹋 meant to wreck or to waste; a plan collapsing was simply, tersely, 糟了.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

糟糕 is the everyday oh-no — bad weather, bad grades, bad hair; 乱糟糟 rooms and 糟心 commutes fill complaint texts. Elders scold children for 糟蹋粮食, wasting food; essayists still cite 糟糠之妻 in marriage columns; and 糟粕 marks the dregs worth discarding. The brewer's residue became modern life's default disaster word.

Why this character belongs on skin

糟 began in the vat: the rice radical beside a vessel — it is the dregs, the spent grain left after the wine is pressed out, what the ancients fed to pigs and the frugal drank anyway. From there it slid into the language as a verdict on everything: 糟糕, terrible; a messy situation, a ruined plan, a life going to the dregs. But stay a moment with the original image, because it is kinder than the slang. Dregs are what remain after the wine — and what remains is not nothing. The grain gave everything it had; the alcohol flew off bright and volatile, and the heavy, honest part settled below. Stoicism would recognize the situation: the uncontrollable poured off, the residue yours to work with. Compost, bread, vinegar — the dregs feed new life. To wear 糟 is to claim every wreckage as raw material, to be the person who takes what the year leaves behind and still ferments it into something.
