Cultural Story

绊 began as a practical cord: a leg-tether to keep a horse from wandering in the night pasture. Because a tethered foot catches on everything, the word turned into a metaphor for whatever trips a career or a friendship, and 绊脚石, the stumbling stone in the path, became the standard image of an obstacle that mockingly looks small.

Read the story behind the character

Bàn still catches modern ankles, literally and otherwise. Everyone has 绊倒, tripped over, a charging cable in a dark hallway; runners blame an uneven curb. Youth slang, borrowed from Japanese anime subtitles, treasures 羁绊, the fated bond, between partners, while career columns warn that fear of public speaking is the biggest 绊脚石, stumbling block, to promotion.

Why this character belongs on skin

Something catches your foot, and for a breath the whole life tips. 绊 is the fetter, the trip-rope — the binding that makes you stumble, written with the thread radical, as if the snare were spun from your own attachments. The Buddha named craving the great 绊, the tie that keeps the soul from walking free. Yet the warrior knows the trip can save you — a stumble that keeps you from the cliff. To wear it is to make peace with what holds you: the love, the debt, the beautiful weight. Let this character sit at the ankle, the joint that learns the catch, where humility lives in the body. Some marks are about freedom; this one is about the bond that teaches it. Carry the fetter. It is the quiet truth that you are held — and held, sometimes, is the only way you were ever kept safe.
