Cultural Story

舶 means a great ocean-going vessel, the deep-sea ship that crossed monsoons to Guangzhou's anchorage. Foreign merchants arrived on 蕃舶, barbarian ships, and everything they carried was 舶来 — come by ship. Hence 舶来品, imported goods: silks of glass, frankincense, ivories, medicines. Port registries of the Tang and Song counted these hulks by the hundreds, each 巨舶, huge ship, a small floating world of cargo and crew.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

The supermarket's import aisle is a modern 舶来品, imported goods, display: Dutch cookies, Japanese soda, German tools. At the container port you watch a 船舶, a huge vessel, unload crates by the thousand, every one technically 舶来 — arrived by ship, just as in the Tang dynasty. Your aunt still calls any foreign gadget 舶来的, something the ships brought in.

Why this character belongs on skin

Beyond the harbor mouth, where the familiar coast thins to blue, the great sea-going ships set out carrying what no near shore has seen. This character names that vessel, the ocean-going craft, and by extension everything borne from distant worlds to yours. To bó is to be foreign-borne, the spice, the idea, the lover who arrived from somewhere you could not find on a map. The ancients watched such ships unload the unknown at their docks and understood that wealth and wisdom both arrive from beyond the horizon. A man inked with this carries the mark of the traveler and the transplanted thing, the part of him that never quite belonged to one shore. Place it along the forearm, the limb that reaches across water, and let it say: I am borne from far, I carry what my homeland lacked, and the distance that made me is the only passport I need.
