Cultural Story
Tao Yuanming, resigning from office after eighty-odd days as a magistrate, asked himself why he should not return while his fields and garden lay untended, and that line made tangled weeds the standing image of a neglected home. Essayists later used the same root for writing grown disordered, argument choking under bramble clauses.

Read the story behind the character
An abandoned lot in the old town grows over with weeds until the community garden project clears it, a blog post admits its cluttered draft needs a hard edit, the editor cuts everything tangential, and a farmers market sells turnips, here called turnip-mustard roots, roasted with honey. Renovation vlogs love the before shots.
Why this character belongs on skin
There is a wild mercy in what we abandon. 芜 is the overgrowth—rank weeds claiming the untended field, the garden gone to secret green, the life left to its own unpruned excess. Its grass climbs where order stopped; what was cultivated dissolves into something older and less polite. We fear the neglect, the unraveling, the plan that rotted. But 芜 also holds a strange freedom: the field freed from the gardener's tyranny, the self allowed to run wild for a season. To wear it is to mark a time you let things go to seed and found, beneath the weeds, a truth the tidy rows had hidden. It is a character for the unkempt, the recovered, the ones who bloomed outside the beds. The ink is a tangle on the skin, deliberate. Let it say the wilderness you feared was also a kind of honesty, and the weeds, too, were alive.
