In the modern world

Why this character belongs on skin

The armor goes on one piece at a time, and so does the self. 装 means to dress, to adorn, to outfit — also to pretend. One character holding both: costume and costume's cousin, the lie, the mask, the suit of clothes we call a personality. This double meaning is ancient honesty. Everyone dresses — for battle, for dinner, for the role the day demands — and the warrior's plate and the guest's smile are the same act wearing different cloth. The question the character asks is quiet and sharp: beneath the gear, what remains? The Daoist answer is that the best disguise is none, that the uncarved block outlasts every ornament. But there is dignity in armor too, when it guards something true. To wear 装 is to own the performance — to know you are always, in some sense, dressed, and to make sure what's underneath is worth defending. Ink it over the shoulder, where the strap would lie. Dress for the life you intend.
