The 诗经's 节南山 warns that 赫赫师尹, the illustrious Grand Master Yin, is watched by all the people, his bright name a burden as much as a boast. 赫赫 means that blazing, conspicuous glory, the root of 显赫, prominent, and the unit 赫兹 we borrow from another tongue. The blazing name was both a crown and a warning to those who bore it.

Two red characters stacked make one that blazes. 赫 is glaring brilliance—显赫, illustrious and unmistakable, 赫然, suddenly towering into view. Its heart is 赤, crimson, doubled until the color itself becomes fame: the red of banners at dawn, of a cardinal's robes, of war gods from Mars to Guan Yu. The Book of Odes uses it for the awe a king inspires, the radiance you feel before you understand it. To wear 赫 is to stop apologizing for your own wattage. Not loudness—presence.
