Cultural Story
The rut a cart cuts is 辙, the groove it leaves in mud or snow. 车辙 are the twin lines a passing load leaves behind, plain as a signature on the ground. In the fable of the southward traveler the 辙 he makes points north, the track betraying his true direction. To 改辙 is to change course; to be 没辙 is to have no road left to try at all.

Read the story behind the character
After the rain the lane shows deep 车辙 where the delivery van passed, and a driver who missed the turn must 改辙 at the next bridge. Faced with a broken system a clerk sighs he is 没辙, out of options. The rut a wheel cut two thousand years ago now names a habit, a mistake, and a dead end — the line on the ground that tells you where you have actually been going.
Why this character belongs on skin
Every wheel that passes writes a little prose on the earth, and the character 辙 is that writing: the wheel radical crossed with the sense of a groove, a rut, the track left behind. The philosopher Zhuangzi used the image dryly—ruts of water on a fish's stranded back, enough to keep it alive but not enough to live on, a famous warning about help that arrives too thin. But there is another reading in these strokes. A track is proof of passage. Somewhere behind every groove is a cart that was heavily loaded, a driver awake at dawn, a road chosen over a hearth. You have left tracks too—in people, in rooms, in years—and you cannot see them from inside the moving wagon. This tattoo is the looking back. Not in regret. In evidence: you went this way, and the earth remembers.
