Cultural Story
Laozi advised in the 'Daodejing' to know the male yet keep to the female, '守其雌,' holding the yielding 雌 as a source of strength rather than weakness. The same character names the 雌花 that ripens fruit and the 雌蕊 at a blossom's heart. To read 雌雄 as only opposites misses the older point, that the soft side steadies the hard one.
Common words & phrases

Read the story behind the character
A botany student labels a tray of 雌花 beside their male partners, tracing the 雌蕊 with a probe under the lamp. The 雌性 tag on each specimen tells the greenhouse which plants to cross by hand. Out in the field a gardener checks the 雌雄 of a young papaya to decide where it will go in the orchard row.
Why this character belongs on skin
This character is the hen beside the rooster, the right-hand bird in every field: 此, this one here, standing with the bird radical — the female that is present, particular, seen. 雌 means female, but Lao Tzu made it a philosophy. In the Tao Te Ching, knowing the male yet keeping to the female is how one becomes the valley of the world — strength that wins by receiving, power that endures by yielding, water that wears down stone. The lioness does the hunting. The spider is the one who waits, and waiting is her strategy, not her weakness. History keeps misreading this: the quiet one at the table is often the one holding the map. 雌雄 together means to determine a victor — 一决雌雄, settle who is who — as if victory itself were decided between the feminine and the masculine, the still and the striking. A tattoo for the woman (or the man) who knows that stillness is a blade. This one here. Present, patient, and quietly in charge of everything that matters.
