Huo Qubing, the Han general who died at twenty-three, rode north to break the Xiongnu and earned the name that later families carried as 霍. His sudden, 霍然 strikes across the steppe became the very meaning of swift action. The 霍乱 that fills hospital wards in later centuries took the same brisk syllable, as if the sickness too moved without warning.
