高 is a picture of a tall tower or watchtower with its upper story and broad base. The 《説文解字》 says 象台观高之形, "it resembles a lofty terrace." From that silhouette came all height and elevation.

Why this character belongs on skin

The mountain does not announce itself; it simply rises until the clouds must acknowledge it, and the Chinese call that rising 高. Height is the oldest metaphor for the worthy life, the high mind, the lofty aim, the perch from which the small troubles shrink to nothing. The Daoist climbs to breathe thinner, clearer air; the warrior takes the high ground because he understands advantage is also a kind of grace. To wear 高 is to orient yourself upward, to refuse the gravity of the trivial. You have reached for heights others called impractical, a love, a standard, a silence, and found the view worth the climb.
