Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 薄 Bó (2nd tone; báo for physical thinness, bò only in 薄荷, mint). The Shuowen Jiezi records a sense that has completely inverted: 「薄,林薄也。从艸溥聲」 — '薄 is 林薄, dense scrub-woodland; from 艸 (grass) with 溥 as the phonetic.' 溥 itself means 'broad, ample'. So the character began as *thick* vegetation and now means *thin*. Li Mi's memorial gives its most famous line: 《陳情表》 「日薄西山,氣息奄奄」 — 'the sun draws near the western hills; the breath is faint' — written of his dying grandmother, and still the standard image for a life or an era close to its end. 薄 is a free morpheme and a surname (as borne by the Liu-Song master 薄紹之). Honest disclosure, and it matters: nearly every common compound is a deficit — 薄命 (ill-fated), 薄情 (heartless), 刻薄 (caustic), 單薄 (frail), 薄弱 (weak) — and 日薄西山 is death-adjacent. This is a subtle, literary character, not a flattering one.
Cultural Story
薄 is thinness in every register: 薄雾, thin mist, over the river at dawn; 单薄, frail, for a jacket — or a constitution; 淡薄, faint, for smoke, memory, and old attachments. But it cuts moral edges too: 刻薄, harsh and mean, describes the tongue that skins people; 薄弱, weak, names the failing link in any chain. And in polite self-deprecation it is everywhere: a host's 抱歉薄酒, poor wine, thin hospitality — thinness as courtesy.
Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 薄 is a 'sunt lacrimae rerum' character — the word for how little is left. Li Mi's line 日薄西山,氣息奄奄 ('the sun draws near the western hills; the breath is faint'), written about his dying grandmother, is the Chinese counterpart of Dylan Thomas's dying of the light, only quieter and addressed to an emperor. And the pairing is a coincidence with real force: this is the calligrapher's surname. Bo Shaozhi — 薄紹之 — was ranked second only to the Wang family, which is its own kind of thinness: the permanent margin between very good and immortal. His dates are unknown, his works survive mainly as names in other men's catalogues. Meanwhile the character itself performed a full reversal, from the Shuowen's 林薄 (dense scrub) to today's 'thin, slight, meagre'. So this is attenuation signed by a man history recorded thinly. Beautiful, literary, and honestly melancholy — not a compliment.

Read the story behind the character
薄 measures jackets and manners. A hiker sheds layers as 薄雾, thin mist, burns off the valley; mom nags about the 单薄, frail, jacket in November wind. An old grudge has gone 淡薄, faint, with the years; a review torches the boss's 刻薄, harsh, reply-all email. An auditor flags 薄弱, weak, internal controls — and the retiring director, raising cheap beer, jokes about his own 薄酒, poor wine.
Why this character belongs on skin
Hold the paper to the light and watch the world come through it. 薄 means thin—petal-thin, dawn-mist thin, the 薄纱 gauze that promises more than it conceals. But the character is trickier and truer than fragility: it also means to slight, to look down on, and in 薄酒 the wine a poor host pours with a rich heart—humble, self-deprecating, offered anyway. Thinness here is a spectrum from lace to loneliness: 薄情, cold-hearted, the love that wore through; 薄雾, the fog that makes strangers gentle to each other. The same strokes hold the tease of silk and the ache of being undervalued, and the character refuses to pick a side, because life doesn't. To wear 薄 is to claim the tender edge: to be translucent on purpose, letting light through rather than hoarding it, delicate by choice and never by defeat. Ink it on the inner arm or behind the ear, where the skin itself is thinnest, and let it confess what gauze knows—what is most easily pierced is also what lets the morning in.
