Cultural Story

In Xin Qiji's lyric "Shuilongyin" a defeated hero asks, "倩何人唤取,红巾翠袖,揾英雄泪" — whom can I hire to fetch a girl with green sleeves to wipe my tears? The poet uses 倩 for both beauty and the act of commissioning help. Tang epitaphs too praised a daughter's 倩影, her lovely figure, carved in stone for the mourning family.

In the modern world

A bride's 倩影 fills the phone screen as the photographer kneels for the shot. Couples 倩人 to decorate a flat before the holiday. The word still means both a pretty face in a photograph and the practical act of hiring a hand: a friend paid to move a sofa, a studio booked to capture a moment worth keeping.

Why this character belongs on skin

In the oldest poem we have of longing, a woman turns back with what the verse calls her lovely smile—the beautiful, angled glance, teeth showing between parted lips—and suddenly every ornament in the world is beside the point. This character is that smile. It names a specific kind of beauty: not still, not posed, but alive in the turning, the dimple caught mid-laugh, the charm that exists only in motion. Classical poets also used it for the person you'd ask to speak for you when your own heart was too full—so it carries both radiance and advocacy, the lovely one who pleads your cause. As a tattoo it is for the charming and the aware of it, or for those worn in honor of a beloved. Set it on the ribs, the hip, the nape of the neck—somewhere a lover might find it. It asks nothing, promises everything: that beauty, the living kind, the kind that turns around, will be what you carry through this life.
