On the loom, 经 are the lengthwise warp threads, fixed before weaving begins, the constant that everything else crosses, and from this came the name of the constant books: the 诗, 书, 礼, 易 and 春秋, the five classics every scholar memorized. A doctor of old traced the 经络, meridian channels, along the body as surely as a weaver traced his warp.
