缃 was the pale yellow of raw silk lightly dyed, a color scholars loved. Book wrappers and scroll cases were made of 缃色 silk, so 缃帙 came to mean the books themselves — a library's shelves of pale-yellow volumes. Weavers also produced 缃绮, light-yellow patterned silk prized for summer robes in the heat of the southern courts.
