2 · The Character: 宙 Zhòu (4th tone). The Shuowen reads 宙 as 「舟舆所极覆也。从宀由声」 — 'the covering over which the boat and carriage reach their limit' — i.e. the vault that roofs all motion. Later thinkers fixed it as time itself: 《淮南子·齐俗训》 states 「往古来今谓之宙，四方上下谓之宇」 — 'past and present is called 宙; the four quarters and up-down is called 宇.' So 宇 is space, 宙 is time — together the universe. Grading: a free, vast morpheme — time, the duration of all things. No negative sense. Disclose that 宙 pairs with 宇 (space) and that alone it means 'time/depth', a profound but abstract ink. Modern science borrowed the pairing for 'universe' (宇宙), but the classical weight is philosophical: 宙 is the river of time in which 宇 (space) is set.
