Cultural Story
俎 is the sacrificial stand. In the 论语 the 俎豆 are set out for the rites; a victim's flesh was laid on the 俎上 before the altar. The 左传 speaks of one who would be meat upon another's board. To write 俎 is to name the wood between the living and the rite.

Read the story behind the character
A museum case holds a bronze 俎豆 from a Zhou tomb; a textbook shows the 俎上 where the offering was laid. The word now lives in archives and in the old phrase for one doomed to be another's prey. The ritual board and its grim idiom both survive — in glass, in print, in warning.
Why this character belongs on skin
In the bronze-age temples it stood between heaven and the family: a wooden stand, zǔ, on which the sacrificial offering was laid out—meat arranged with precision, presented to the ancestors with wine and bowed heads. From this humble cutting board grew an entire moral vocabulary. The statesman's supreme art was to settle a war at the banquet table rather than the battlefield—diplomacy fought, as the old phrase has it, entirely upon the zu. What is a altar-board, finally? A surface where nourishment becomes meaning; where slaughter is made sacred by attention and order. Every tradition consecrates some version of it—the communion table, the Seder plate, the butsudan's small offerings—and every one begins with the same human intuition that food, offered with care, is prayer. To wear this character is to keep the stand in your own life sacred: to treat the meals you make, the tables you set, the gifts you lay down for others as ritual rather than routine. It marks a person who knows that devotion was always, at bottom, an act of laying things out.
