Cultural Story
Su Shi's poem on 渑池 recalls how a wild goose leaves 雪泥鸿爪, claw-marks on snowy mud, a fleeting 踪迹, trace, of passage soon erased. 踪 is that print of having been somewhere, the root of 跟踪, to follow a trail, and 失踪, to vanish without one. A life, the poet says, is mostly trace. The goose's print in the mud is the poet's image for a life soon erased.

Read the story behind the character
At a police desk, an officer 跟踪, tails, a suspect and logs the 踪迹, traces, left at a scene while a family reports a member 失踪, missing, with no 踪影, sign, of where he went. Su Shi's goose on the snow now animates a detective's screen and a worried phone call. The detective's trail is the same fleeting mark the goose left on snow.
Why this character belongs on skin
Snow at first light, and across it — a line of prints leading toward the treeline, evidence that someone passed this way. The character puts the foot radical beside a phonetic of following: trace, footprint, the record a body leaves simply by moving through the world. Hunters read these like scripture. Detectives too. And the ancients pressed the idea further — the track of a wheel, the traces of a teaching passed hand to hand, lineage written in who followed whom. Everyone leaves them, whether or not they mean to: the dent in a pillow, the signature in wet cement, the way your laugh survives in someone else's laugh. Most of us never see our own trail. We only feel the walking. That is the strange, tender vanity of this character — to claim, in permanent ink, the evidence of passage. I was here. I moved through. Put it near the pulse and let it say what every trail says to the one who finds it: someone went this way. You can go farther.
