榜 is a placard or public list, and the Shuowen links it to 牓, a board on which notices were posted. The great drama of old China was the 金榜, the golden list of exam passers posted at the capital - to have one's name on it (金榜题名) meant honour for a clan. A 榜 also named a model, so 榜样 became 'one who sets the standard.' The word is the public surface of ambition and virtue alike.
