In Tao Yuanming's 'Peach Blossom Spring' (桃花源记), a fisherman finds a hidden valley whose people fled centuries before, 避秦时乱 — escaping the turmoil of the Qin. The character 避 — to avoid, evade, flee — opens that paradise. Later readers used it for any retreat from trouble: 躲避 a tax, 避让 a quarrel, 避嫌 the appearance of favour.
