2 · The Character: 妙 妙 (miào, 4th tone). Honest philological disclosure first: 妙 is NOT in the Shuowen Jiezi. Xu Shen records 玅，急戾也。从弦省，少聲 (a taut-string sense) and 眇，小目也 — and Duan Yucai states plainly at 眇: 引伸為微妙之義。《說文》無妙字。眇即妙也 — 'extended, it gives the sense of the subtle; the Shuowen has no 妙; 眇 is 妙.' So 妙 is a later graph, 女 + 少, whose meaning came from smallness: what is fine, minute, and therefore marvellous. Laozi built a metaphysics on it: 《老子》第一章 '常無欲以觀其妙' and '玄之又玄，眾妙之門' — the gate of all subtleties. Sun Guoting applied it to brush-work in 《書譜》: '同自然之妙有'. 妙 is a free morpheme — 妙！ alone is an exclamation of delight, and 妙不可言 means 'too wonderful to say.' Honest disclosure: 莫名其妙 means 'baffling, inexplicable,' and 妙齡 is age-and-gender specific.

Cultural Story

In the classical tradition 妙 carries the deepest philosophical weight. The 道德經 opens its second chapter with "玄之又玄，众妙之门" — the gate of all subtleties. Here 妙 means the mysterious, ungraspable vitality of the Dao. Later critics praised 妙 as the highest quality of poetry and painting: a beauty that cannot be fully explained, only felt by the attentive heart.
