Read the story behind the character
Among the trainees the 佼佼 ones lead the demo; a 佼好 smile wins the ad. In a contest the judges single out the 佼佼 few. Standing out — a top student, a lovely face — is what this old word still marks when one person rises above the crowd.
Why this character belongs on skin
佼 is excellence with a face. The person radical beside 交, to cross, to meet — the Book of Songs gives us 佼人僚兮, the beautiful one, radiant, moon-risen: the oldest love poetry in the language stopping mid-breath to stare. The character later came to mean the outstanding one, 佼佼者, first among equals, the champion in any room. So it holds both meanings without strain: the beautiful and the best, because in the oldest way of thinking they were never separate. Beauty was competence seen from outside; competence was beauty doing its work. We have grown embarrassed by such words, taught to shrink from the thought that anything — or anyone — might simply be superior, chosen, luminous. 佼 refuses the shrug. It says: excellence is real, it has a body, it walked into the story and everyone turned. Wear it as a standard, not a boast — over the heart or along the collarbone, where the light lands. Then spend the rest of your life quietly earning the ink.
