Cultural Story
帔 is a shoulder cape worn over formal robes, especially by women of rank. The great Ming and Qing ceremony dressed a bride in a 凤冠霞帔 - a phoenix crown and a rosy 帔 - the height of wedding honour, reserved for the wife of an official. The 霞帔, 'rosy cloud cape,' was embroidered with birds and flowers signalling her husband's grade. To wear the 帔 was to wear the family's standing on one's shoulders.

Read the story behind the character
Today 帔 lives mostly in costume and opera. A bride in a historical drama dons the 凤冠霞帔, the phoenix-crown and embroidered cape, for her wedding scene, and a dancer wears a flowing 霞帔 across the stage. Collectors admire a 绣帔, an embroidered cape, in a museum case. Though no one wears it to the market now, the 帔 still glows in festivals and period films as the emblem of bridal splendour.
Why this character belongs on skin
帔 is the long silk shawl that Tang-dynasty beauties draped across their shoulders—gauze that moved with them like slow water, painting color over the curve of collarbone and the slope of a back. Painters gave it to celestial maidens: the 霞帔, rosy-cloud cape, was what immortals wore, fabric that had never learned gravity. Taoist goddesses and opera heroines still trail them across the stage, a strip of silk that turns a body into an apparition. The cloth radical tells you what it is; the 皮 skin-component whispers what it does—material that behaves like a second skin, intimate and drifting. There is a reason the veil and the shawl appear in every culture's idea of the erotic: they reveal by touching, by suggestion, by the delayed reveal. 帔 is ink for the shoulders, where the shawl rests. Let it say what the silk said: clothed, and more naked for it.
