Cultural Story

A great-bellied jar for water, wine and pickles, the weng stood in every courtyard well. History's darkest joke is 请君入瓮 — 'please step into the jar yourself' — the trap a Tang official set for his fellow interrogator; strategists added 瓮中捉鳖, catching a turtle in a jar, for prey with no escape.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

The jar survives in liquor shops and farm courtyards as a 酒瓮, wine jar, and in city walls you can still walk: the 瓮城, barbican, a pocket of masonry where attackers who breached the gate found themselves, literally, inside the jar.

Why this character belongs on skin

A jar holds its secret by saying nothing. This character names the great earthen vessel of old China — pot-bellied, narrow-mouthed, squatting in the corner of a cellar where wine darkens toward its better self. Time is the ingredient. What goes into the jar sharp, rough, half-made comes out years later rounded and true, and the jar never takes credit. There is a famous tale of a man caught inside one, and of children who broke it open to save him — proof that even the deepest containment can yield to decisive hands. The mystics of every tradition have loved the vessel: the hollow that makes the pot useful, the emptiness that is the whole point. You know what it is to keep things — griefs, ambitions, a love no one has named yet — stored in the dark where they quietly improve. This character is for the patient curator of your own interior. Ink it small, somewhere the curve of your body echoes the curve of the jar.
