Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

禊 survives as heritage: calligraphy societies hold a 禊事, purification gathering, each spring by a stream, brushes in hand; museums stage 修禊-themed exhibitions of Lanting masterpieces. In daily speech it never appears — it is a word owned by poets and April water.

Why this character belongs on skin

Twice a year, in the old calendar, people went down to the water to be washed of everything unluckily accumulated — the third day of the third month, the seventh of the seventh. The rite was called 禊: riverside purification, wine floating on cups downstream, poems written on the spot, the whole community standing in the shallows letting the current take what needed taking. The most famous gathering of them all produced the most celebrated calligraphy in Chinese history, drunk and happy on a spring afternoon by a stream. This character is that ritual, distilled. You do not need the river, though you would enjoy it. You need the act: the deliberate, periodic washing of the ledger — the grudge, the stale grief, the version of yourself you've been carrying past its season. Ink 禊 at the wrist or ankle, where water would touch you first. It is a vow to keep your own rites: to regularly, ceremonially, release. The current is patient and has never once refused a burden offered to it. Bring yours down to the water. The old word for that is joy.
